7 or 8 days
Scenic western approach, camping and good acclimatization opportunities. We commonly recommend the 8-day version for first-time altitude trekkers.
The best Kilimanjaro route is not simply the shortest or most popular. It is the route that gives your body enough time to acclimatize and matches your available days, camping preference and mountain experience.
We usually encourage first-time high-altitude trekkers to compare 8 Day Lemosho, 7 Day Machame and 9 Day Northern Circuit before choosing a shorter route. The extra time is not about walking slowly for no reason; it gives your body more nights to adjust as you gain altitude.
Marangu is different because it uses mountain huts rather than tents. Rongai approaches from the northern side and often feels quieter. Umbwe is steep and direct, so it suits experienced and very fit trekkers better than a first high-altitude climb.

Popular camping route with dramatic scenery and a climb-high, sleep-low profile. Seven days gives a more comfortable acclimatization schedule.
The main hut route. It follows the same trail for much of the descent. Six days is preferable to the shorter 5-day option when possible.
Northern approach, often quieter and useful for travelers who prefer a less busy trail. Seven days gives more acclimatization time.
The longest mainstream route, circling the quieter northern slopes before joining the summit approach. Excellent for travelers with enough time.
Steep, direct and physically demanding. Better for experienced hikers who already understand how they respond to altitude.
Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe use tents. Marangu uses huts, which appeals to climbers who do not want to camp.
Longer routes generally give your body more time to adjust. The route profile, daily altitude gain and number of nights before summit night all matter.
Machame and Marangu can feel busier. Rongai and the Northern Circuit often feel quieter, although trail numbers change by date and season.
Many routes eventually merge before the summit. What changes most is how you reach the high camps and how much acclimatization you have built before summit night.
For many first-time high-altitude trekkers, 8 Day Lemosho, 7 Day Machame or 9 Day Northern Circuit are strong routes to compare because they allow more acclimatization time than the shortest versions.
Marangu is the main route using mountain huts. The other common routes use tents.
Rongai and Northern Circuit often feel quieter than Machame or Marangu, although trail traffic depends on season and departure dates.
Usually not our first recommendation. Umbwe is steep and direct and is better for experienced, very fit trekkers who understand high-altitude hiking.
It may be possible on selected itineraries subject to park rules and operational planning. It should be discussed before booking rather than assumed as a standard camp.
We will compare the routes around acclimatization, camping or huts, your fitness and your wider Tanzania itinerary.
