Use camps in the migration area
A lower driving burden gives you more time to search, wait and respond to movement.
The wildebeest migration is a moving ecosystem, not a scheduled event. This guide explains the main Serengeti areas by season and how local route planning protects your time near the herds.
Rainfall, fresh grass and water drive the migration. That means the herds can be early, late or spread across a wide area. We use the month as a planning starting point, then choose camp locations that make sense for that stage of the migration.
For January to March, we usually look toward Ndutu and the southern plains. As the rains change, herds move through central and western Serengeti. From roughly July to October, northern Serengeti and Mara River country become the main focus for travelers hoping to witness river-crossing behavior.

Choose your travel period, priority and available time.
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu short-grass plains are a major focus. Calving often peaks around February within this broader period, with predators attracted to the concentration of prey.
As rains and grass change, the herds begin spreading north and west. This can be a transitional period with movement through central Serengeti and toward the Western Corridor.
The Western Corridor and Grumeti area can become important. Timing varies from year to year and herds may be distributed across a wide area.
Northern Serengeti and Mara River country are the main focus for river-crossing trips. Crossings can happen suddenly, repeat, or not happen on the day you are waiting.
As short rains develop, the migration gradually turns south. Herd distribution can be particularly changeable, so recent conditions matter.
A lower driving burden gives you more time to search, wait and respond to movement.
Migration behavior is not scheduled. More time in the target area gives the safari room to breathe.
A Kogatende or Serengeti bush flight can be valuable when it protects time, especially on shorter northern itineraries.
No operator can truthfully promise a Mara River crossing on a specific date or hour.

See northern routesNo. Crossings are natural events and can happen suddenly after hours or days of waiting. We can position the safari in the right region and give you enough time, but not guarantee the event.
For a migration-focused trip, two or three nights in the northern area is much stronger than a single night. Longer stays give you more opportunity to follow herd movement.
No. The migration is a year-round movement through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Different months are associated with different areas and behaviors.
Stay in or close to the Ndutu and southern Serengeti ecosystem so you are not spending large parts of the day transferring from central Serengeti.
A bush flight can be useful when your itinerary is short or when you want to avoid repeating a long road transfer. Driving can still be worthwhile when the route includes central Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
We will match your travel window with the most sensible Serengeti area and explain where extra nights will give you the most value.
