6 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Umbwe Route

Overview

The 6 day Umbwe Route is the most challenging and direct trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its steep ascent and dramatic scenery. Best suited for experienced and well acclimatized trekkers, this route offers a quieter, less crowded path through dense rainforest, ridges and alpine desert before joining the southern circuit and continuing to Uhuru Peak.

Day to Day Itinerary

ARRIVAL

Arrive in Moshi and check into your hotel for overnight stay on a half-board basis. You will attend a comprehensive pre-trek briefing covering safety procedures, route details, altitude awareness and daily expectations. Your trekking equipment will be checked and fitted to ensure readiness for the climb. Use the remainder of the day to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the challenging ascent ahead.

DAY 1: UMBWE GATE (1,600 m) – UMBWE CAVE CAMP (2,850 m)

The Umbwe Route begins on the southern side of the mountain. After registration at the gate, you will start trekking through dense rainforest accompanied by your guides and porters. The trail is steep and narrow, winding through thick vegetation and towering trees.

As you progress, the path climbs between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers, offering occasional views of Kibo Peak if the weather is clear. The environment is rich in biodiversity, with chances to see monkeys and exotic birdlife.

You will arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, set among large trees and dense undergrowth. Tents will already be set up, and a warm dinner will be served.

Distance: 10.5 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Zone: Rainforest

Meal Plan: Full board.

DAY 2: UMBWE CAVE CAMP (2,850 m) – BARRANCO CAMP (3,900 m)

On the second day, the landscape changes dramatically as you leave the rainforest behind and enter moorland terrain. Vegetation becomes sparse, replaced by shrubs, giant heathers, and rocky outcrops.

The trail follows a narrow ridge with steep drops, gradually opening into the Barranco Valley. Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Great Barranco Wall, with views of Kibo Peak in the distance.

At this point, you will join trekkers from the Machame, Lemosho, and Shira routes, making the camp noticeably busier.

Distance: 6.5 km
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Zone: Rainforest / Low Alpine Zone

Meal Plan: Full board.

DAY 3: BARRANCO CAMP (3,900 m) – KARANGA CAMP (3,960 m)

The day begins with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb requiring the use of both hands and feet. Once at the top, you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.

The trail continues along the Southern Circuit, with a series of ascents and descents through the Karanga Valley. The terrain becomes increasingly dry and rugged as you approach Karanga Camp.

This is an important acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

Distance: 6 km
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Zone: Low Alpine / High Alpine Zone

Meal Plan: Full board.

DAY 4: KARANGA Camp (3,960 m) – BARAFU CAMP (4,670 m)

This is a relatively short but important day as you make your way to Barafu Camp. The trail passes through a stark alpine desert landscape with minimal vegetation and exposed terrain.

Barafu Camp sits on a rocky ridge and is highly exposed to strong winds and cold temperatures. You will arrive early, allowing time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

An early dinner is served, and you will be advised to sleep early as the summit climb begins around midnight. Proper preparation, including organizing gear and insulating water bottles, is essential.

Distance: 3.5 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Zone: High Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Full board.

DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP (4,670 m) – UHURU PEAK (5,895 m) – MWEKA CAMP (3,100 m)

Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. You will trek slowly up steep scree slopes under the darkness, guided by headlamps. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the climb.

By sunrise, you will reach Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue for another 1–2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.

Due to extreme cold and low oxygen levels, time at the summit is brief. After taking photos, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through changing vegetation zones.

Distance: 4.5 km ascent / 11 km descent
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours ascent, 5–8 hours descent
Zone: Arctic / Glacial - Alpine - Moorland

Meal Plan: Full board.

DAY 6: MWEKA CAMP (3,100 m) – MWEKA GATE (1,640 m)

On the final day, descend through lush rainforest with thick vegetation and muddy trails. The air becomes warmer and oxygen-rich as you lose altitude.

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Moshi for rest or onward travel.

Distance: 8 km
Trekking Time: 3–5 hours
Zone: Rainforest

Meal Plan: Half board.
