Do You Need a Visa for Tanzania?

Most international visitors to Tanzania require a visa to enter the country. Tanzania offers visa-free entry to citizens of certain countries, particularly from the East African Community (EAC) and some African Union member states. Citizens of most Western countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union countries, Canada, and Australia — require a visa.

Always verify current visa requirements for your specific nationality with the official Tanzania Immigration Department website or your nearest Tanzania embassy or consulate, as regulations can change.

Tanzania e-Visa (Online Visa Application)

Tanzania offers a convenient e-Visa system that allows travelers to apply for their visa entirely online before departure. This is the recommended application method for most travelers and significantly streamlines the arrival process.

How to Apply for a Tanzania e-Visa

1. Visit the official Tanzania Immigration portal at immigration.go.tz
2. Create an account and complete the online application form
3. Upload required documents (passport copy, passport photo, return flight details, yellow fever certificate if applicable)
4. Pay the visa fee online via credit or debit card
5. Receive your e-Visa approval by email (typically within 7–10 business days)
6. Print your e-Visa approval letter and present it at the immigration desk on arrival

Tanzania e-Visa Fees

• Single entry tourist visa: USD 50 (standard processing)
• Multiple entry visa: USD 100
• Transit visa: USD 30

Visa on Arrival in Tanzania

Tanzania also offers visa on arrival for most nationalities at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and other international entry points. This single visa covers entry to all three countries and costs USD 100 for a single entry valid for 90 days across the region.

The East Africa Tourist Visa can be applied for online through the Tanzania e-Visa portal or the Kenya eCitizen portal.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Tanzania. It must also have at least two blank pages for visa and entry stamps. Check your passport expiry before booking your safari and renew it if necessary.

Yellow Fever Certificate

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission (including most sub-Saharan African and South American countries). Entry for Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. Your Tanzania visa covers entry to Zanzibar — no separate visa is required. However, Zanzibar operates its own immigration desk at Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), where your passport and visa will be checked separately. This is a formality and typically takes only a few minutes.
