Planning a Tanzania safari involves more than choosing the right parks and lodges — understanding the entry requirements is an essential early step in your travel preparation. This guide covers Tanzania visa requirements for international safari travelers, including application processes, fees, and practical tips to ensure a seamless arrival.
Tanzania is one of the world's great safari destinations, home to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, and the beaches of Zanzibar. Getting the entry paperwork right means your journey with Serengeti Wild Tours begins as smoothly and excitingly as possible.
Most international visitors to Tanzania require a visa to enter the country. Tanzania offers visa-free entry to citizens of certain countries, particularly from the East African Community (EAC) and some African Union member states. Citizens of most Western countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union countries, Canada, and Australia — require a visa.
Always verify current visa requirements for your specific nationality with the official Tanzania Immigration Department website or your nearest Tanzania embassy or consulate, as regulations can change.
Tanzania offers a convenient e-Visa system that allows travelers to apply for their visa entirely online before departure. This is the recommended application method for most travelers and significantly streamlines the arrival process.
Fees are subject to change — always confirm current fees on the official immigration website before applying.
Tanzania also offers visa on arrival for most nationalities at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and other international entry points. However, applying in advance via the e-Visa system is strongly recommended to avoid queues at immigration, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Visa on arrival fees are the same as e-Visa fees: USD 50 for a single entry tourist visa. Payment is accepted in USD cash (preferred), Euros, and major credit cards at some airports.
If you are combining Tanzania with Kenya and/or Uganda — for example, visiting the Maasai Mara in addition to the Serengeti — the East Africa Tourist Visa offers significant convenience and value. This single visa covers entry to all three countries and costs USD 100 for a single entry valid for 90 days across the region.
The East Africa Tourist Visa can be applied for online through the Tanzania e-Visa portal or the Kenya eCitizen portal.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Tanzania. It must also have at least two blank pages for visa and entry stamps. Check your passport expiry before booking your safari and renew it if necessary.
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission (including most sub-Saharan African and South American countries). Even if not required for your specific travel history, a yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended for all Tanzania travelers. Carry your vaccination certificate at all times during your trip.
In addition to visa requirements, all Tanzania safari travelers should ensure they have:
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. Your Tanzania visa covers entry to Zanzibar — no separate visa is required. However, Zanzibar operates its own immigration desk at Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), where your passport and visa will be checked separately. This is a formality and typically takes only a few minutes.
