Kilimanjaro Machame Route Guide: The Whiskey Route Day-by-Day

The Machame Route — affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route" — is the most popular and arguably the most spectacular climbing route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its stunning scenery, excellent acclimatization profile, and high summit success rates, the Machame Route attracts adventurous trekkers from around the world who want the most dramatic Kilimanjaro experience available.

At Serengeti Wild Tours, the Machame Route is one of our most requested Kilimanjaro trekking options. This complete day-by-day guide covers everything you need to know before you climb.

Why Choose the Machame Route?

  • Highest scenic variety: The Machame Route passes through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit zone — more ecological zones than any other route.
  • Excellent acclimatization: The "climb high, sleep low" profile of the Machame Route significantly improves acclimatization compared to shorter, more direct routes.
  • High success rate: The 7-day Machame Route achieves summit success rates of approximately 90–95%.
  • The Barranco Wall: A dramatic and thrilling scramble that is one of Kilimanjaro's most memorable trekking moments.

Machame Route: Day-by-Day Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (2,980m)

The trek begins at Machame Gate, located on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The first day takes you through dense montane rainforest — rich in wildlife including blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and an extraordinary diversity of birds and plants. The trail climbs steadily through the forest for approximately five to seven hours before emerging at Machame Camp, where you set up camp and enjoy your first evening on the mountain.

Distance: ~11 km | Trekking time: 5–7 hours

Day 2: Machame Camp (2,980m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)

The forest gives way to open heath and moorland as you gain altitude. Giant heathers, giant groundsels, and lobelia plants create an otherworldly landscape. The trail continues steadily upward to the vast Shira Plateau — a broad, ancient volcanic caldera — with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro's Kibo cone emerging above.

Distance: ~5 km | Trekking time: 4–6 hours

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,976m) via Lava Tower

This is a critical acclimatization day. The trail ascends to the dramatic Lava Tower at 4,642m — well above your sleeping altitude — before descending to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" day is essential for preparing your body for the higher altitudes ahead. The descent to Barranco reveals the full drama of the Barranco Wall towering above the camp.

Distance: ~10 km | Trekking time: 6–8 hours

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,976m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m) via Barranco Wall

The Barranco Wall is the most technically engaging section of the Machame Route — a 300-meter scramble up near-vertical volcanic rock that requires using both hands and feet. It is not difficult (no climbing equipment needed), but it is thrilling and deeply satisfying. Above the wall, the trail traverses a dramatic ridge before descending to Karanga Valley and the Karanga Camp.

Distance: ~5 km | Trekking time: 4–5 hours

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

The trail ascends through increasingly barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp — base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape at Barafu is stark and dramatic, with the glaciers of Kilimanjaro's southern ice fields visible above. Arrive at camp, eat an early dinner, rest briefly, and prepare for summit night.

Distance: ~4 km | Trekking time: 3–4 hours

Day 6: Summit Night — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

The summit attempt begins between midnight and 1:00 AM. You ascend in darkness with headlamps, moving slowly and steadily through the cold (temperatures can fall to -20°C). After approximately five to seven hours of climbing, you reach Stella Point (5,756m) at the crater rim — often where the first golden light of sunrise appears. From Stella Point, a further 45-minute traverse along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak — the roof of Africa.

After photographs, celebration, and a moment of profound emotion, you begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, passing back through Barafu Camp to collect gear before continuing down to Mweka.

Total distance (summit and descent): ~17 km | Trekking time: 12–16 hours

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) — Descent

The final morning descent through rainforest returns you to Mweka Gate, where you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Congratulations — you have climbed the highest mountain in Africa.

Distance: ~10 km | Trekking time: 3–4 hours
