Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated safari destinations — and for travelers who make the journey, it is often the highlight of their entire Northern Circuit safari. Famous for its ancient baobab trees, enormous elephant herds, and diverse birdlife, Tarangire offers a distinctly different and deeply rewarding safari experience compared to the better-known Serengeti.
At Serengeti Wild Tours, Tarangire is a key feature of our Tanzania Lodge Safari packages, and our guides have an exceptional knowledge of this park's hidden corners and wildlife hotspots.
Tarangire National Park is located in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Arusha. It covers an area of about 2,850 square kilometers and is centered on the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area during the dry season. This river becomes a critical lifeline for wildlife, drawing animals from across a vast seasonal ecosystem every year.
Two things define the Tarangire landscape above all others: its iconic ancient baobab trees and its massive elephant herds. The park is home to one of the largest elephant populations of any protected area in Africa, and during the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River in scenes that feel like a living David Attenborough documentary.
The baobab trees — some thousands of years old — give Tarangire a prehistoric, otherworldly atmosphere unlike anything else in Tanzania. Their enormous, swollen trunks and skeletal branches create extraordinary photographic compositions, particularly at golden hour. If wildlife photography is your passion, our Photographic Safari Experience in Tarangire is not to be missed.
Tarangire supports an impressive diversity of wildlife, making it an excellent Big Five destination even outside the peak elephant season.
Tarangire is arguably Tanzania's best destination for elephant sightings. During the dry season (June–October), herds of 50 to over 100 elephants can be seen congregating along the river, digging for water, socializing, and bathing. It is one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife concentrations.
Tarangire has a healthy lion population, and tree-climbing lions are occasionally spotted in the park's large acacia trees. Leopards are present but secretive, typically found in the riverine forest along the Tarangire River and its tributaries.
During the dry season, Tarangire hosts the second-largest wildlife migration in Africa — often called the Tarangire Migration. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and other ungulates move into the park from the surrounding ecosystem as the dry season intensifies.
Tarangire is one of the better places in Tanzania to spot the endangered African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf. Packs occasionally pass through the park, and sightings — while not guaranteed — are thrillingly memorable when they occur.
With over 550 bird species recorded, Tarangire is a world-class birding destination. The park is famous for its massive flocks of red-and-yellow barbets, yellow-collared lovebirds, superb starlings, and the stately Kori bustard — the world's heaviest flying bird.
The dry season from June to October is the undisputed best time to visit Tarangire. As water becomes scarce across the ecosystem, animals concentrate around the Tarangire River in extraordinary numbers. Game viewing during this period is among the best in all of Africa.
However, the wet season from November to May also has its appeal. The park turns lush and green, migratory bird species arrive in abundance, and there are far fewer visitors. Resident wildlife is still plentiful, and the dramatic skies make for spectacular photography.
Tarangire is most commonly combined with the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara as part of the classic Northern Safari Circuit. A typical Northern Circuit itinerary of seven to ten days allows you to experience the full variety of Tanzania's most celebrated ecosystems.
For families, Tarangire's abundant wildlife and shorter game drives (compared to the Serengeti) make it an excellent starting point. Our Tanzania Family Safari packages often include Tarangire as the first destination, easing families into the safari experience before moving on to more extended Serengeti drives.
After a classic Northern Circuit, many guests extend their journey with a beach holiday on Zanzibar, creating a perfect wildlife-and-beach combination. Read more about this pairing in our guide to the Beach & Safari Experience.
Tarangire offers accommodation options for every budget, from exclusive luxury tented camps positioned inside the park to comfortable lodges near the park entrance.
