Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safari: Everything You Need to Know

A hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences on Earth. Drifting silently above the open plains at sunrise, watching the golden light wash over the savannah below, with wildebeest, elephants, and giraffes tiny in the distance — it is the kind of moment that stays with you for the rest of your life.

At Serengeti Wild Tours, our Balloon Safari Experience is one of the most requested additions to any Tanzania safari. Whether you are celebrating a honeymoon, a special birthday, or simply want to see the Serengeti from its most spectacular perspective, this guide tells you everything you need to know.

What Is a Serengeti Balloon Safari?

A Serengeti balloon safari is a guided hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti National Park, conducted at sunrise for the best light and wildlife activity. Flights are operated by licensed, experienced balloon pilots and launch from designated sites near Seronera in the Central Serengeti, as well as from the Northern Serengeti during the migration season (July–October).

Flights typically last approximately 60–90 minutes and cover a distance of 15–30 kilometers, depending on wind conditions. After landing, guests are met by a ground crew and treated to a celebratory full bush breakfast with sparkling wine in the wilderness. Each flight concludes with the presentation of an official balloon safari certificate.

What Will You See from the Balloon?

The perspective from a balloon basket changes everything about how you experience the Serengeti. From above, the scale of the ecosystem becomes apparent — the endless plains stretching to the horizon, the meandering rivers, the kopje outcrops, and the tiny moving shapes of animals far below.

Common sightings from the balloon include:

  • Wildebeest herds: From above, the migration herds appear as dark rivers flowing across the plains — one of Africa's most iconic aerial images.
  • Elephants: Families with calves are particularly photogenic from the aerial perspective, moving in slow procession through the acacia woodland.
  • Giraffes: Their graceful movement and extraordinary height make giraffes especially beautiful from a balloon.
  • Lions: Early morning lions are often still active when the balloon launches — sometimes visible feeding on a kill from directly above.
  • Hippos: The river hippo pods below are clearly visible from the balloon in the first light of dawn.
  • Birds: Soaring raptors occasionally share altitude with the balloon, offering extraordinary close encounters.

Balloon Safari by Season

The Serengeti balloon safari is available year-round, but the subject matter changes with the season:

  • January–February (Calving season, Southern Serengeti / Ndutu): Enormous concentrations of wildebeest with newborn calves, and intense predator activity visible from above.
  • June–October (Dry season and river crossings, Northern Serengeti): Migration herds in the north, river crossing views, and the golden dry-season light.
  • Year-round (Central Serengeti): The Seronera launch site operates throughout the year, offering excellent year-round sightings of resident wildlife.

Practical Information for Balloon Safaris

Early Start

Balloon flights require a very early departure — typically between 4:30 and 5:30 AM — to arrive at the launch site in time for sunrise inflation and takeoff. Our safari team will arrange your early wake-up call and transport to the launch site.

Weight and Safety

Balloons have a maximum passenger capacity (typically 12–16 passengers) and weight limits. Children must be at least five years old to fly. All pilots hold professional balloon pilot licenses and adhere strictly to Civil Aviation Authority regulations.

Photography

A balloon safari is an extraordinary photography opportunity. A wide-angle to mid-range zoom lens (24–105mm) is ideal for aerial landscape shots and wildlife scenes below. The smooth, vibration-free ride makes the balloon an excellent photography platform. For serious photography travelers, our Photographic Safari Experience includes detailed balloon photography guidance.

What to Wear

Dress in warm layers for the balloon flight — the pre-dawn drive and early morning balloon altitude can be cold. A light jacket is recommended even in the dry season.

The Bush Breakfast Experience

The balloon experience does not end at landing. After touching down in the wilderness, the ground crew sets up a full celebration breakfast in the open bush — tables, chairs, silverware, Champagne, fresh fruit, eggs, and hot coffee — surrounded by the Serengeti landscape. It is a wildly incongruous and utterly memorable experience: fine dining in the African wilderness, with the sound of the savannah all around you.
